(University of Cincinnati, Department of Environmental Health)
- Abstract: As the industrial world
becomes more technologically driven, the stressors on the workers have
become more complex in nature. Workplace environments have traditionally
adressed the physical aspects of the work like weight of lift, position of
the object, and speed of work. And recently, more efforts have been
undertaken to look at the psyshosocial and mental aspects of the workplace.
However, in most cases, the effort has been univariate in nature and
specifically failed to account for interactions among the factors.
Furthermore, the human body has traditionally been thought as individual
parts (e.g. invrstigating risk factors for a specific body region), often
neglecting the fact that these body regions are often dependent upon other
componenets. Some examples are: impact of other body parts, impact of
cognition on the biomechanics of worker, and muscle coactivation. This
approach leads to a more comprehensive look at the human system when
adressing specific etiologies of musculoskeletal disorders, specifically low
back pain.
