On Wednesday, May 14th, 2008 we will have the privilege of hosting Dr. Barrett Caldwell, a member of Purdue University's Industrial Engineering faculty. The meeting will be in Baker Systems Room 210 from 5:30-7:00 p.m.

Team Coordination and Event Management by Distributed Experts

The increasing complexity of modern engineering systems creates new demands for effective team coordination, information sharing, and distributed performance. Systems engineering considerations for improved human-automation interactions require improved robust system performance designs, including recognition of effective information flow and the ability of humans to effectively operate in and recover from nominal as well as degraded performance conditions. The requirements for effective information flow and context sharing between distributed experts has led the author to develop the principles of distributed supervisory coordination, an evolution of Sheridan's Human Supervisory Control paradigm applied to team-based cognitive engineering settings. This presentation also describes issues of coordinated recognition, response, and management of events as performed by physically, temporally, or cognitively distributed experts.
