John Flach Talk

Dear HFES student chapter members,

We are very happy to report on the talk from Monday, April 11. Our speaker was Dr. John Flach and he is a professor at the Department of Psychology at the Wright State University. You can find more information about him on his web page (http://www.psych.wright.edu/Flach/index.htm).

The topic of the presentation was "Collision Control: A Case for Active Psychophysics". You can find a short abstract of this talk at the end of this page.

The meeting was in room 120 Baker Systems.  The joint meeting of OSU Student HFES Chapter and the Central OH Chapter of HFES started at 5.30 pm and we provided pizza and pop. During the period from 5.30 pm to 6.00 pm we discussed upcoming events. Dr.Flach's talk started at 6.00 pm.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Abstract

Collision Control: A Case for Active Psychophysics

Classical psychophysics tends to focus on the open-loop relations between physical properties of a “stimulus” and human judgments. In active psychophysics we explore the closed-loop relations between perception and action. The physics in this program must consider physical aspects of the “stimulus” (e.g., optics) and physical constraints associated with the action system (e.g., braking dynamics). In addition, the closed-loop dynamic introduces intentions or goals as an additional constraint that must be addressed. This talk will summarize recent work in our lab to understand how human’s control collisions? I will try to convince you that interesting generalizations might be made to sports and driving (e.g., the design of automated braking systems).
